Basic Needs of Life

Twenty-plus years ago, in the heart of Polk County, a compassionate soul named Stephanie Stuart noticed a gap in the services provided to families affected by the HIV/AIDS virus. While there were many programs to address various needs, the most basic necessities—like toothpaste, toilet paper, feminine products, and toothbrushes—were often overlooked. Determined to make a difference, Stephanie rallied her friends, many of whom were local queens, and together they pooled their tips to buy these essential items. Stephanie personally delivered these goods, and thus, the Basic Needs of Life (BNL) was born.

Over the years, BNL evolved into a cherished annual tradition: a Food and Toy Drive. The first drive took place at a local club, The Dockside Lounge, which has since closed its doors. However, the spirit of giving lived on, finding new homes in various local businesses such as The Parrot, Briva, IL Forno, Best of British and now The Elks Club.

Each year, the community comes together in a festive celebration. Local entertainers, including drag performers, dancers, DJs, and anyone with a talent and a heart for helping, join in the fun. The event is filled with laughter, prizes, delicious food, and wine, all in the joyous spirit of the holidays. After the festivities, volunteers rush home to prepare the gifts and food baskets, ensuring they are ready for delivery on Monday morning. Just in time for the families to receive their gifts and enjoy the holidays, thanks to the unwavering dedication of BNL and its supporters.

This Year we will be partnering with Rose Dynasty Foundation sponsored by Pineapple Healthcare, Il Forno, Rose Dynasty Foundation, Amazing local performers and more. We will be hosting the event at the Elks Lodge in Lakeland on Saturday December 14th 2024. More information for tickets and time to come.
